Merunisa’s Story #findyourinnerwarrior

Meet Merunisa a 23 year old singer based in London. I met Merunisa at an event by @acollectivesould and was completely mesmerised by her voice and since following her on Instagram I have also wanted to take cooking lessons from her but have loved following her journey so far. Merunisa started singing when she was 3 years old and through choirs at school her love for singing only grew stronger. "I have always known singing is something I've wanted to pursue". However she also loved to write and she studied creative writing at university, this not only gave her the skills to write short stories etc but helped her develop her song writing skills too. When she's in her zone she can write whole song in a couple of hours!

She does a lot of her own research into what she wants her sound to be, taking inspiration from artists like @jheneaiko, @theweeknd and @kehlani. At the present time she would define her music as R&B or alternative R&B however artists styles change and develop and she is still exploring new sounds.

Since she started creating music in 2016, Merunisa's experience of the industry has been a bit of rollercoaster. She wanted to come into the industry correct and be happy with the sound she is putting out because wants her music to be uniquely her. "There are people that try to mould you into something you're not, that try to change your style to make you more like Summer Walker but I am Merunisa and I have to hold onto that". Part of the struggle as an emerging artist is that it can be frustrating when something you have worked on for a long time doesn't do as well as it's supposed to or it doesn't get the reaction you thought it would and Merunisa said she has struggled with this from time to time. This can take a toll mentally because you can start to doubt yourself but sometimes you have to remember that your music isn't always going to be for everyone and her passion always pulls her through.

Merunisa also highlighted the fact that women are often sexualised in the music industry and it's fine if that is the brand you want to put out there but it's important to draw the line where you feel comfortable. "I'm not just another pretty singer on Instagram, I want to be that relatable person". The advice she would give to any young female in the music industry right now is don't change yourself or your sound for anyone.

Through her career she has already achieved so much including a recently released single in collaboration with Zuka, She performs regularly at events such as @burstldo and @theawelf and she will be releasing a new EP very soon. For music that you can properly vibe to please check out her Instagram and Spotify. Happy listening!
